East Timor Peacekeeping



In the year1520, the Portugal first colonized the country. When the country gained its independence in the year 1976, Indonesia invaded East-Timor. The East Timor Peacekeeping process has been going on since many years. The peacekeeping process in the East Timor was initiated by the concern peacekeeping staffs of the United Nation. No other country, except Australia gave recognition to the invasion. The western countries and the United States of America approved the Indonesian invasion on the East- Timor, since Indonesia was a trading partner of the UN.

The East Timor Indonesia Genocide lead the country to utter penury and thousands of Timorese died from famine, diseases. The Indonesian invasion on the East-Timor did not get any global attention during that time and brutally killed the Timorese leading to the death of 200,000 people. In the year 1990s, the human rights abuses of Indonesia started getting attention from the various foreign countries. In the year, 1996 two activists of the eastern region of Timor, Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo and José Ramos-Horta, were honored with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for their hard work to gain freedom in a nonviolent way.

In the year 1998, B. J Habiebe , the president of Indonesia announced of holding a referendum on the independence of the East Timorese. The time for the referendum on self rule came closer and the conflict between the two parties, Indonesian paramilitary forces and the guerillas rose to a great extent. In the year 1999, most of the East Timorese people voted for the freedom of the East Timor. International pressure forced Indonesian military to permit UN forces in the East Timor and regain peace.

In the year 1999, the Australian peacekeeping staffs of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), present in East Timor helped in restoring peace across the country. East Timor Peacekeeping was successful when Timor-Leste was worldwide recognized as self-governing state in 2002, 20th May. In 2006, in the month of March, again there was fresh violence leading to the breakdown of legal system. More than 2,000 Australian, New Zealand, and Portuguese police and intermediaries was present in Timor-Leste at that time to initiate the peace keeping process in East Timor. Many of the peace personnel were substituted by UN police officers. According to recent report, 850 Australian soldiers still remain in the country.
