East Timor Intervention

When the country gained its independence in the year 1976, Indonesia invaded East-Timor. The Indonesian invasion devastated the country following deaths of more than 200,000 people due to famine, diseases. The UN East Timor Intervention led to the deployment of the peace keeping force in the East Timor region. No other country, except Australia gave recognition to the invasion. The western countries and the United States of America approved the Indonesian invasion on the East- Timor. In the year 1999, most of the East Timorese people voted for the freedom of the East Timor from the Indonesian regime.

In the year 1998, B.J Habibe, the president of Indonesia announced of holding a referendum on the independence of the East Timorese. The time for the referendum on self rule came closer and the conflict between the two parties, Indonesian paramilitary forces and the guerillas rose to a great extent. Due to the global pressure from various foreign countries Indonesia gave permission to the UN forces in East Timor in September 12, 1999. By the Australian, East Timor intervention process, a global peace keeping force was deployed in East Timor during that time.

Indonesian had set up its regime in the country long back in the year 1976. The UN East Timor Intervention led to the progress of the peace process during the crisis of the country. Though, initially the Indonesian troops prevented U. N. intervention in the country but due to the surmounting pressure of the various foreign countries they ultimately allowed U. N. interference in the East Timor. There were several proofs of mass grave unearthed by the UN peacekeepers. Dead bodies of Timorese people were discovered at a large number in the town of Dili, Liquicia. The UN peacekeepers took over the country from "Interfet" ( Australian Peace maintaining force).
