Ever since 1999 the UN in East Timor has played a very important role in determining the political structure of the country and also in ratifying East Timor's status as the newest republic of the 21st century. The role of the UN in East Timor began only when the guerrilla warfare between pro-liberation forces and the Indonesian military took a violent turn and took the shape of a civil war. It was then that the UN started playing a major part in East Timor and brought the situation under control using multinational troops who were deployed in the task of establishing peace in the country. Although, the role of the UN in East Timor and that of the UN Security Council has been abundant yet, the organizations have often been blamed for acting slowly in the issues related to East Timor and thus, allowing the crisis and tension in the area to increase.
The UN' role in East Timor too has been affected by the more influential members of the organization and its role in East Timor is being increasingly affected by power politics. The UN' activities in East Timor has come under minute speculations and criticisms by the more influential countries like the US. The US Congress has of late imposed a 15 day delay rule on UN peacekeeping forces before they can be deployed in East Timor. The increasing amount of catastrophes in the East Timor region is often due to the negligence of US and other powerful western powers in the affairs of Timor Leste.
