President of East Timor



After gaining independence East Timor introduced its new constitution with a parliamentary system of government. Under the parliamentary system of East Timor the president of East Timor has been made the nominal head and the leader of the nation state.

The president of East Timor is elected by the people of East Timor for a period of five year. The President of East Timor officially appoints the prime minister of the Democratic Republic of East Timor. Although the President of East Timor has just been assigned nominal powers, yet he holds the veto power to approve or reject certain kind of legislations. The president is also the chief commander of the defense forces of East Timor. The president, considered to be the symbol of independence of the state functions in order to maintain growth and development in the democratic republic of east Timor.

Xanana Gusmao:

Xanana Gusmao born on June 20, 1946 was appointed as the president of East Timor on the 20th May 2002, after the state attained independence from Indonesia, and stayed in office till the 20th May, 2007.

Jose Ramos Horta:

Jose Ramos Horta born on December 26, 1949 is the present president of the emerging democratic state of East Timor. Jose Ramos Horta also the former Prime Minister of East Timor won the presidential election, 2007 of East Timor and was appointed as the President on 20 May 2007. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace in the year 1996.
