INTERFET East Timor was the name given to the operation aimed at establishing peace in the war ridden country of East Timor. The INTERFET East Timor was responsible for developing humanitarian and security standards in the war ravaged country of East Timor. The INTERFET East Timor was responsible for maintaining peace in East Timor until the United Nations formally stepped in to promote peace in the country. The INTERFET East Timor, a multi-national body was active in East Timor during 1999-2000, when liberation forces were at its peak of guerrilla war with the Indonesian army.
The organization of INTERFET East Timor represents the INTERnational Force for East Timor. The nations which were actively involved behind the emergence of the INTERFET East Timor were Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Portugal, France, Germany, USA, UK, Brazil, Ireland, Norway, Kenya, Canada and Italy. Among all these participating nations it was Australia which took the grestest interest in the smooth working of the INTERFET East Timor and provided the organization with maximum troops and equipment. Since, Australia was the chief contributor to the idea of INTERFET East Timor, therefore, the troops were commanded by an Australian Army Major General, Peter Cosgrove.
INTERFET East Timor had begun operations in the war ravaged areas of East Timor on 20th September, 1999. Peace operations in East Timor began with the deployment of 9 warships, UN personnel, Royal Australian Air forces and Royal New Zealand Air forces in the area. The entry of powerful multinational troops in East Timor forced Indonesian forces to flee the country. On the February of 2000 the INTERFET East Timor had transferred powers in the area in the hands of the UN.
