East Timor elections are held along the same rules and regulations that the constitution of the country have stated. There are provisions for a nationwide electoral process through which the head of the state of East Timor or the President is chosen. The Constitution of East Timor also provides for a nationwide legislative election that gives the power to the people to elect members to the legislature or the parliament who will be responsible for framing rules and regulation that would govern the working of the government of East Timor. The Constitution has provided for fresh East Timor elections after every 5 years since, the legislature and the President are liable to hold office for a continuous stretch of 5 years.
At present the legislature of East Timor consists of 88 members out of whom 13 members belong to single seat constituencies while 75 members had been elected by proportional representation. The first East Timor elections were held in 2001 when the country was in the process of being built up as a republic. However, the second East Timor elections are underway on the 30th of June in 2007 and the process of electing a new President and new legislature are underway. In the present election of 2007, the former President along with his party called the National Congress for Timorese reconstruction, are also standing as nominees. The 4 major political parties taking part in the present East Timor elections are; FRETILIN, CNRT, the coalition of the Social democratic Party and the Timorese Social Democratic Association and the Democratic party.
