East Timor Court was established by the government of Indonesia in the year 1999.
There is a huge history behind the establishment of East Timor Court. In 1975 Indonesia occupied East Timor while it was colonized by the Portuguese. But this Indonesian sovereignty in East Timor was never accepted by United Nation and in the year 1999 the UN coordinated a referendum in which the East Timor got its independence. The response of this event was not good for the people of East Timor. The Indonesian National Army and pro-Indonesian soldiers of East Timor became violent and started murdering people. They murdered approximately 2,000 people and forced near about 500,000 people to leave their homes. But this step that has been taken by Indonesian army was criticized by the whole world.
In response to the pressure of international actors; Indonesia established an ad-hoc human rights court for East Timor to punish those anti social elements that were responsible for the violence. But human rights advocates throw out the East Timor court as a showy misrepresentative organization, intended to conceal something unpleasant affairs. Human rights advocates did this to repose international pressure and established a court sponsored by UN for East Timor.
Apart from the UN sponsored court for East Timor, the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) also created the Serious Crimes Investigation Unit (SCIU) for East Timor. The Serious Crimes Investigation Unit (SCIU) was created to investigate the crime cases in the District Court of Dili, which is the capital city of East Timor. Despite the indictment which charged Indonesian military officers with some offense, Indonesian government refused to recognize the East Timor court and also refused to deliver the charged military officers of Indonesia.
