An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 on Richter Scale struck the South Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu on 8th Sept 2008. No casualties or damages to man-made structures have been reported. Vanuatu is an earthquake prone country, where powerful and moderate earthquakes have struck several times in the recent past. A powerful eathquake of magnitude 7.3 had rattled the country in Aug 1, 2007 cracking roads, streets and buildings and disrupting power supplies. The epicenter of the present quake has been located at 19.974S 169.046E

Hours after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on 8th Sept, another more intense earthquake rattled the South Pacific Island nation, though without causing casualties or damages to man-made structures. The second earthquake, epicentered at 13.487S 166.875E off the coast, had a magnitude of 7.0 on Richter Scale. No Tsunami was generated by the earthquake which hit this earthquake prone region on 9th Sept. The major earthquake on Tuesday was followed by a tremor of magnitude 6.6, which was felt in the surrounding region
