A huge earthquake measuring 7.0 hit New Zealand. The tremors shook the city of Christchurch located on South Island on 4th September, Saturday at 4.35am local time. Aftershocks tore underground water, sewage and natural gas lines besides damaging bridges and disrupting power supply and phone networks. The tunnel linking Christchurch to Lyttleton was closed after cracks appeared in it. However, no deaths were reported. A state of emergency and overnight curfew was declared in Christchurch. Almost two-thirds of the homes in the city were damaged, according to Prime Minister John Key. Initial estimates suggest that loss from the earthquake could be more than £1.3bn. Located near the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, New Zealand sees about 14,000 minor earthquakes every year. This is the second largest earthquake recorded in the country. |

| An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on Richter scale shook the East Timor Region on September 16, 2008 at 7:15:41 PM. The epicenter of the earthquake is reported to be 140 Km (87 miles) E (101 degrees) of DILI, East Timor & 386 Km (240 miles) ENE (68 degrees) of Kupang, Timor, Indonesia. No major casualties have been reported so far in this tremor which originated at the depth of 44 Km. |

| An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on Richter Scale struck Solomon Islands on 9th Sept 2008. After the tsunami generating earthquake that struck the region on April 2, 2007, the region has witnessed a few other moderate quakes on 16th Aug 2007 and 29th July 2008. No damages or casualties have been reported in the present quake. Epicentered at 9.261S 158.255 E, the present tremor has a depth of 10 km. |

| An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter Scale struck the Eastern New Guinea region in Papua New Guinea on 30th Aug 2008. This is the second earthquke in this region in the year 2008. A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.3 had struck the same region on July 26 this year. In November last year, a strong earthquake with magnitude 6.7 had also struck this region in the Eastern Coast. The present earthquake, whose epicenter has been located at 6.194S & 147.255E, had a depth of 56 km. |

| Hours after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on 8th Sept, another more intense earthquake rattled the South Pacific Island nation, though without causing casualties or damages to man-made structures. The second earthquake, epicentered at 13.487S 166.875E off the coast, had a magnitude of 7.0 on Richter Scale. No Tsunami was generated by the earthquake which hit this earthquake prone region on 9th Sept. The major earthquake on Tuesday was followed by a tremor of magnitude 6.6, which was felt in the surrounding region |
