As per the recent WHO estimation, Haiti earthquake has killed 50,000 people approximately.WHO further stated that Earthquake in Haiti has caused "most serious humanitarian crisis faced by the United Nations" in decades. This also means that the Haitian emergency has exceeded the humanitarian destruction caused by the Asian Tsunami in 2004.

On Tuesday, 12 January 2010 Haiti was struck by a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake. A total of 33 aftershocks were recorded by United States Geological Survey, causing extensive damage to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The Presidential Palace, The National Assembly, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral and the main jail of Haiti were some of the most prominent buildings to have been damaged due to the earthquake.

A lot of international societies and agencies including United Nations, Red Cross and the president of Haiti have appealed for a humanitarian response and for donations to be made towards the damage caused by the Haiti Earthquake. Present US president Barack Obama and previous US Presidents like Bill Clinton and George Bush have also come forwards to raising funds for Haiti's recovery.
