6.6 Magnitude Earthquake shakes China
A powerful, shallow earthquake that hit southwestern China on Tuesday night, October 7, has left at least one person dead and over a dozen others wounded, media reports say. The quake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter Scale shook the city of Weiyuan in Yunnan province at around 9:40 pm and its aftershocks continued causing thousands to camp outside amidst the disfigured buildings.
The officials of China say that they have turned on their national earthquake emergency plan and the officials have been dispatched to assist in the search and rescue operation.
More than 300 killed as earthquake rattles China
More than 300 people have been reported killed while hundreds of people injured as the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 rocked southwestern Yunnan province of China on Sunday, August 3.
The earthquake that hit at 4:30 pm with a depth of 12 km caused widespread devastation in Longtoushan township of Ludian County, where the epicenter was situated. More than 1,500 people have been wounded and the place is almost reduced to rubble. On the other hand, in the city of Zhaotong, the earthquake has killed more than 290 people.
Over 300 officials and 400 rescuers have been dispatched to the affected areas, according to media reports.
