A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit remote Qinghai province in northwest China early on April 14, 2010 killing as many as 617 people and injuring thousands. The quake struck the Yushu County at 7:49 a.m. (Chinese local time) with a depth of about 33 km. The epicenter is calculated to be 33.1 north and 96.7 east.
More than 5,000 additional rescuers, including soldiers and medical workers have been dispatched to the quake-hit region, they are now struggling to clear away the rubble and rescue the buried people.
