Northern Thailand is rich in history. The northern part of Thailand has major historical attractions like Chiang Rai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lamphun, Mae Hong Sun and Sukhothai.
The principal attraction of northern Thailand is Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is the ancient capital of the northern kingdom of Lanna. The remnants of the original city are evident by a perimeter wall surrounded by a deep moat. The ancient city has a number of temples. These places of worship date back to the founding of Chiang Mai. Contemporary Chiang Mai is a bustling place filled with small manufacturing units producing lacquerware, silver and silk products. The north Thailand city has a night bazaar famous for its sheer range of traditional products availability.
The other popular attractions of northern Thailand are the cities of Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son. Chiang Rai is regarded as the principal gateway to the 'Golden Triangle' region. Mai Sai is the northernmost town in Thailand. The city is very close to the Thai border with Myanmar. A little distance away is the city of Chiang Saen. Chiang Saen is situated on the banks of the Maekong River. The north of Thailand also has Thailand's first capital city-Sukhothai. The Sukhothai Historical Park contains the ruins of several ancient temples.
