Cinema in any form depicts the social and cultural background of a country. Thai movie has a rich cultural history with movie making dating back to 1897 in the country.

The interest of the Royal Family of Thailand in films developed the making and production of films in the country. Film making in Thailand gathered momentum in the 1930s and continued for a long time.

The first Thai movie was made in the year 1922 with the title Sam Poi Luang: Great Celebration in the North. The first movie of Thailand proved to be a big hit. Chok Somg Chan was the first all-Thai movie. Movies in Thailand also had their golden period with the introduction of talking movies in the year 1928. Long Thang was the first talking movie of Thailand. With rapid developments in the film industry, colored films were also made in Thailand. The first colored film of Thailand was Grandpa Som's Treasure, which was directed by Sri Krung.

With technological advancements in Thai movies, steps were made forward from the 16 millimeters film to the 35 millimeters film. The censor board in films has been very active in Thailand since the day of its inception and continues to this day. Action, animation, comedy, drama, crime thrillers and horrors, romantic and musical themes have been part of movies of Thailand. Thai movies have won several accolades and prizes all over the world in several film festivals. Many Thai actors, actresses, producers, directors and films have gained international reputation today.
