Tennis Singles is a form of tennis where two players face each other and use all their resources to overpower their opponent standing on the other side of the net. More than understanding, this genre of tennis is totally dependent upon individual skills of the players. The matches are played in a rectangular court of length 78 feet and width 27 feet. The height of the net, dividing the court into two halves, is 3 feet 6 inches at the poles and comes down to 3 feet at the centre. The sidelines run along the length of the court while the lines along the width are known as the baselines . The space between the outermost doubles sidelines and the sidelines are known as the doubles alleys and they are not taken to be inside the court in the singles matches. The server has to drop the serve in the service court of his opponent, diagonally opposite to him and the return by the opponent starts a rally .
The tennis singles matches are played in clay or grass courts. Sometimes, the artificial courts like cement, Rebound Ace or coated asphalt are also used. A player needs six games to win a set , staying at least two games up than his opponent. The match contains odd number of games and tie breakers of at least seven points are used to break the ties. Major tennis singles tournaments are governed by the ATP or the Association of Tennis Professionals and the WTA or the Women's Tennis Association for the men's and women's tennis respectively. The Wimbledon , the US Open, the Australian Open, the French Open and the Masters are some of the important tennis singles tournaments.
