Championships at Wimbledon or Wimbledon , as it is commonly known, is the greatest among the grand slam tennis tournaments and is regarded as the greatest competition of tennis on earth. The Wimbledon tennis tournament is played on grass courts and is usually held in the month of June and July. In the coming edition in 2007, the best players from across the world will scorch the green courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London from the 25 th of June to the 8 th of July. Wimbledon, the most prestigious event of world tennis, will have prize money of £4,708,630 and will also offer valuable ATP points to the players on winning the matches.




Since its beginning in 1877, a lot of great players have proved their mettle in the oldest tennis tournament of the world . Wimbledon tennis has even made stars out of unknown players. There are a total of five championships. Gentleman's Singles is the one in which Roger Federer is the defending champion, winning the trophy in 2006 for the fourth time in a row. The Ladies' Singles has Amelie Mauresmo as the defending champion and Bob and Mike Bryan are the current champions of the Gentleman's Doubles. The Chinese pair of Zi Yan and Zheng Jie won the Ladies' Doubles championship in 2006 while Andy Ram and Vera Zvonareva captured the Mixed Doubles crown the same year. Some of the great names associated with the Wimbledon are Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf.

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships attract a large crowd of spectators annually who gather to watch the players try their level best to capture the number one spot of world tennis.
