The 2008 Australian Open results have shown the emergence of some new stars in the world of tennis. Novak Dokovic won the men’s singles title, while Maria Sharapova, the last year’s runner up, won the women’s single title.
The 2008 Australian Open tournament was held at Melbourne of Australia from 14th January to 27th January. This was the 96th edition of the famous Australian Open, which is one of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments held every year among the best players of the world of tennis.
The singles competition was divided into 7 rounds, while there were 6 rounds in men’s and women’s doubles events. However, in the mixed doubles event, the format consisted of 5 rounds. After competing in all the rounds the best players of the 2008 Australian Open reached the finals.

No.3 seed Novak Dokovic of Serbia defeated the unseeded French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets to win the first Grand Slam tournament of his career. He won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at the Rod Laver Arena.
Dokovic lost the first set to Tsonga by 4-6. However, he came back to the match after winning both the second (6-4) and third set (6-3) against the French finalist. Already a favorite for the men’s title, Dokovic entered the fourth set, where he bagged the title by winning the set by 7-6(7-4). The 2008 Australian Open men’s singles is the first title won by Novak Dokovic in 2008 and the eighth of his career.
In the semifinals, both the finalists had defeated the top two rank holders of men’s tennis. Dokovic defeated the No.1 seed Roger Federer (7-5,6-3,7-6), while No.2 seed Rafael Nadal lost to Tsonga (2-6,3-6,2-6) in the semifinals.
2008 Australian Open Results- Women’s Singles Final
Crowd favorite Maria Sharapova, the 5th seeded player won over Ana Ivanovic, seed No.4 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Displaying her sublime touch, Sharapova took control of the match from the beginning. This is the 17th title won by Maria Sharapova in her tennis career.
2008 Australian Open Results- Men’s Doubles Final
Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram of Israel competed against Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra of France in the final match of the Men’s Doubles event during the 2008 Australian Open tournament. In the final, 8th seeded team of Erlich and Andy Ram defeated the No.7 seeds of Clement and Llodra 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) and bagged the Men’s Doubles title at the tournament.
2008 Australian Open Results- Women’s Doubles Final
The Bondarenko sisters, Alyona and Kateryna, of Ukraine won against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Shahar Pe'er of Israel, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Alyona and Kateryna lost the first set by 2-6. However, they came back in the match and won the Women’s Doubles title by taking following two sets by 6-1 and 6-4.
2008 Australian Open Results- Mixed Doubles Final
The Chinese-Serb pair of Sun Tiantian and Nenad Zimonjic got the better of Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi of India in straight sets. Played at the Rod Laver Arena, the No.5 seeds won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

In the junior section of the 2008 Australian Open, there were also 4 events for juniors, which were competed during the tournament. Bernard Tomic of Australia and Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands won the Boy’s Singles and Girl’s Singles titles respectively. The Boys’ Doubles title was won by Hsieh Cheng Peng and Yang Tsung-Hua of Chinese Taipei, while Ksenia Lykina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia took the Girls’ Double title.

- Girls' Doubles: Ksenia Lykina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated Elena Bogdan of Romania and Misaki Doi of Japan in straight set (6-0, 6-4).
