Backhand Tennis is a shot associated with the sport of lawn tennis where the players hit the ball by swinging the racquet across his body from the opposite end of the hand in which the racquet is held. It starts in the left side for a right handed player and in the right side for a left handed one. The backhands are usually executed with only one hand, but double handed shot is also common. The use of two hands in executing a backhand was first introduced by players like Vivian McGrath and John Bromwich of Australia.
Though a double handed approach helps in executing the backhand shot with more power, yet there are some basic advantages of performing it single handedly. With it the shot can be given any direction wanted and the players can also add topspin or underspin in it and also slice it into a drop shot . According to the critics, the player with the best backhand of all times was Don Budge . A few other world famous players also have won high acclaims for their mastery in the use of backhand shots. These include names like J immy Connors, Chris Evert, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Justine Henin.
Like any other tennis stroke, proficiency in backhand tennis also gives an added confidence in the mind of the players. It is one of the most difficult tennis shots to master. Yet the backhand tennis helps the players to overpower their opponents in the tough matches on the tennis circuit
