Stone Town Zanzibar

Tanzania is visited by tourists from all over the world. The Stone Town Zanzibar is a magnet for visitors to Tanzania for its illustrious history and famed architecture.

Stone Town Zanzibar is the old part of the city of Zanzibar. The Zanzibar city is the capital of the Zanzibar province in Tanzania. The Stone Town was constructed on the western coast of Zanzibar island. The old city occupies a triangular area of land. Narrow roads, old houses, shops and mosques make up the urban scenery of the town. The architecture of Stone Town in Zanzibar is predominantly Swahili. The Swahili architecture exhibits clear influences of Arab, Persian, European, Indian and African architectural styles. The Arab buildings show characteristic enclosed wooden verandas and exquisitely carved wooden doors.

The urban landscape of Stone Town is dominated by two large structures. The two man-made structures are the House of Wonders and Arab Fort. The House of Wonders was built by Sultan Seyyid Barghash as a palace for royal ceremonies. The Arab Fort was a former Portuguese settlement. The Stone Town in Zanzibar was the center of trade in east Africa. Trade was conducted between the African and Asian trading communities. The principal export from Stone Town in Tanzania was spices.
