Lindi is another important town in Tanzania. Located on the extreme end of the Lindi Bay, Lindi is situated in southeastern Tanzania. The Lakuledi River is also near Lindi. The Lindi region in Tanzania is named after the town only. The population of the town is extremely low, with developmental procedures underway for the Tanzanian town.
Though Lindi is 450 kilometers to the south of Dar es Salam and 105 kilometers to the north of Mtwara, the town is well connected to both these important places in Tanzania by airways as well as by roadways. Roadways are being developed on a rapid scale to upgrade the transport and communication system of Lindi.
Lindi Port is the most important place in the town. It supports the economy of the town along with some small industries. The port is such that only small passenger boats and mini cargo ships can come to Lindi. Access to large bulk carriers are not there. There are Indian and Arab merchants who carry on trade activities in Lindi, boosting the economy of the town. Other employment opportunities are extremely limited in the small town.
Lindi has gradually developed into a cosmopolitan town with facilities of a market, schools at primary as well as secondary levels, post office, banks with ATMs, internet cafes and a bus station. Guest houses for tourists are also available. The main religion in Lindi is Islam and Swahili is the official language of the Tanzanian town.
