Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo in Tanzania is one of the most famous historical cities in the country. In the ancient times, Bagamoyo served as the capital of German East Africa and was the primary center for slave trade in Africa. Today, Bagamoyo has changed a lot but the historical flavor of the town is still present. The city has been home to several explorers and geographers for its rich historical and cultural background.

The location of Bagamoyo is very convenient. It is in close proximity to Dar es Salam, former capital of Tanzania. The city is also located on the coast of the Indian Ocean and is very close to the mystical land of Zanzibar. Due to the geographical proximity of Bagamoyo to two other important places of Tanzania, the place has also gained reputation as a tourist destination.

The main occupation of the people of Bagamoyo is dhow sailboat building. Since there are beaches in the city of Bagamoyo, so fishing is also an important activity in Bagamoyo.

Since there are many historical and heritage sites in Bagamoyo, the Department of Antiquities in Tanzania are striving to maintain the ruins of Bagamoyo as places of tourist attraction. Not only historically rich, the city also has rich cultural background. Songs, dances, drama and sculpture making are extensively taught in Bagamoyo. The Bagamoyo College of Arts is an international hub for artists from all over the world. Hukwe Zawose, the traditional musician is also from the city of Bagamoyo.
