Tajikistan women are immediately identifiable by their beautifully and brightly colored long skirts, gowns and scurfs. Generally considered as hardworking and strong, women in Tajikistan have withstood the tumultuous history of the region right from the medieval days. However, it had been difficult for women to emphasize their rights as equals with their male counterparts because of the stringent social constraints that they have faced all through the history of Tajikistan.
Tajikistan is a financially unstable state and the condition of society in general heavily deteriorated in the times following the cessation with the Soviet Union and the resultant civil war. Tajikistan women had to face the brunt of most oppressions and violence.
Predicament of Tajikistan Women
The condition of Tajikistan women in the early years of post – Soviet Tajikistan have been dismal to say the least. The intense labor migration and casualties caused by the long drawn out civil war, have left many women to be the sole bread earners for their families. The number of widows is also among the women of Tajikistan. At the same time, the employment conditions being extremely low in the country, most women are left victim to economic insecurity. Being single and jobless, violence is not uncommon among the women at Tajikistan.
Recent efforts from the UN to improve the lot of Tajikistan Women
The United Nations have recently taken serious note of the poor condition of women in Tajikistan. Many NGOs have entered the country after 1999, drawing the world's attention towards the wretched condition of Tajikistan women. Help came flooding in thereafter from every corner of the world. Although the conditions is far from ideal, there have been some signs of improvement observed and the situation can only improve in the coming years.
