Tajikistan Education

A modern Tajikistan education system was established by the Soviet policy in Tajikistan. But education was not available to the people at large. After independence, the National Ministry of Education started looking after the education system with funding from the state.

The state of education in Tajikistan was not upto the mark prior to 1991. According to statistics, in 1989, 21% of the total Tajik population had partial secondary schooling, only 16% availed primary schooling and 55% successfully completed secondary education, and 7.5% graduated.

Education at Tajikistan was imparted through schools for higher education, middle (secondary) education and primary education. There were two types of Middle schools: specialized or general. In case of secondary education, out of 1,000 Tajikistanis, only 427 passed from a middle school, which was non-specialized and out of 1,000 Tajikistanis, 211 left schools without graduating. Out of 1,000 Tajikistanis, 110 went to a middle school, which was specialized. There is still scope for improvement in the quality of education delivered in science and mathematics. Between 1985 and 1990, an average number of 86,800 students went for non-specialized middle schools and an average number of 41,500 students went for specialized middle schools per year. In the session 1990-91, 68,800 Tajikistani students went to higher education institutions.

For education of Tajikistan, the languages of instruction are Tajik, Russian, Kyrgyz, and Uzbek. After independence, more of Tajik language substituted more of Russian language.

In Tajikistan, the first higher education institution established is the State Pedagogical Institute in Dushanbe. It was started in 1931. Tajikistan State University was established in 1948. By 1994, State Pedagogical Institute boasted of 6,196 students, 864 faculty members and fourteen departments. By the later part of the 1980s, Tajikistan established twenty higher education institutions. The Tajikistan Polytechnic Institute was established in 1956 in Dushanbe.
