In December 1994, after the Tajik government as well as the opposition agreed to a cease-fire in September 1994, the
United Nations established a United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT) with an objective to monitor the cease-fire.
United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan monitored the cease-fire agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the United Tajik Opposition. Later, the
United Nations in Tajikistan also observed the violations of the cease-fire. In fact, after the signing of the peace treaty by both the Tajik Government and the Opposition in 1997, the
United Nations of Tajikistan kept an eye on the general elections of Tajikistan.
In 1999, it was reported by the United Nations of Tajikistan that United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan comprised of 37 military observers and 167 civilian staff. After, the
United Nations at Tajikistan successfully accomplished its task to observe the cease-fire in Tajikistan, it was terminated on 15 May, 2000.
