Tajikistan president. He won the
Presidential election by securing a stupendous amount of votes, adding up to a notch below 80 percent of the total votes, in the 2006 elections. He came to the news after changing his name from Emamli Rahamonov, as an attempt to lose one's Russian affiliation and go back to the Tajik roots.
Emamolii Rahmon, the present
Tajikistan president, is a member of the People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan and has been so right from the very beginning of his political career which started humbly at his native province of Dangara. He reached the pinnacle of his political career when he was elected into the Soviet Supreme Council from the Tajik SSR in erstwhile Soviet Union in the post of a people's deputy.
After the creation of Tajikistan in 1992, the presidential post became a bone of contention for the Soviet Soviet and the newly independent state. After the resignation of Rahmon Nabiyev as Tajikistan president amidst vehement opposition from the anti-Soviet groups, the then speaker of the Soviet Supreme Council was forced to take on the responsibilities. Akbarsho Iskandar, the speaker's reign as the acting president came to an end amidst extremely civil unrest. Soon, Rahmon was elected into the office through a popular consensus of the people. He has continued to act as the nation's president ever since. His last victory attests to his wide popularity among the inhabitants of Tajikistan.
