The main issue of Taiwan Politics is whether Taiwan, including Penghu should remain under the effective territory of the Republic of China, or become unified with the territories currently been administered by the People's Republic of China, or become the Republic of Taiwan. Presently, Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen Matsu and some other minor islands have made up the jurisdiction of the state known as the Republic of China.
During the Qing Dynasty, China ceded the island of Taiwan. Since antiquity Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory and the 1943 Cairo Declaration as well as 1945 Potsdam Declaration has reaffirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan as a matter of international law.
On the other hand, the people supporting Taiwan independence argue that Taiwan was officially been incorporated as a Chinese territory during the Qing Dynasty, (1683), and in 1885 as a province. Subsequently, just after the Shimonoseki Treaty of 1895, Taiwan had been de jure part of Japan when the Republic of China was set up in 1912.
Currently Kuomintang is the ruling party of Taiwan. It is also said to be the biggest political party in terms of seats in the Legislative Yuan. The People First Party along with the Chinese New Party has formed KMT, which is known as the Taiwanese Pan-Blue coalition. It supports eventual reunification with the mainland.
The detailed information regarding Taiwan Politics gives a brief picture of the past history of Taiwan as well as shows how this country is presently been ruled out.
