Taiwan is an island of East Asia. The islands of Taiwan and Penghu are formally governed as Taiwan Province of the Republic of China. The main island of Taiwan is called Formosa.

The island of Taiwan lies around 120 kilometers off the southeast coast of mainland China, across the Taiwan Strait. It covers an area of 35,801 square kilometers. The East China Sea flows to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east and the South China Sea to the southwest. The Yu Shan at 3,952 meters is said to be the highest point of Taiwan. Aside it, there are five other peaks over 3,500 meters. This has probably made Taiwan the seventh highest island in the world.

Nearly around 80% of the total population belong to an ethnic group of Hoklo and speak Standard Mandarin as well as Taiwanese. Mandarin is considered to be the basic language of instruction in schools, but, most of the spoken media is split between Mandarin and Taiwanese. On the other hand, around 15% of the people in Taiwan belong to a group of Hakka and speaks in Hakka dialect. Other minority groups generally speak in their native languages. The Taiwan culture is a perfect fusion of Confucianism Han Chinese cultures, Japanese, European, American, global, local custom. In true sense it is the mixture of tradition and modernity.

While talking about Taiwan we should not miss out to mention the National Palace Museum that is said to be the greatest attraction of the country. It has a rich collection of calligraphy, painting, Chinese bronze, jade, and porcelain. Popular sports of Taiwan are basketball and baseball.
