Taiwanese




Almost 70% of Taiwan's population speak Taiwanese and is considered as their native language.

Taiwanese is a variant of Amoy Min Nan. It is usually taken as Chinese Dialect with larger Chinese language. It is also considered as a language of Sino Tibetan family. As the branch of Min Nan there is both colloquial version and a literary version of Taiwanese. The literary version originates from Middle Chinese era. Literary Taiwanese was used at one time for official writings. But now its almost extinct.

Phonetically Taiwanese is a tonal language with extensional tonal rules. There are 7 tones traditionally. Taiwanese was first introduced in writing in the late 19th century. Almost 70% of the population of Taiwan speaks this language. Rest of them speaks Mandarin. Outside Taipei the maximum population prefers to speak Taiwanese. Taiwanese is a language that suits even the informal situations.

The grammar of Taiwanese is similar to southern Chinese languages as named Hakka and Cantonese. The sequence is subject verb object. Taiwanese do not have a strong writing tradition but presently literary Chinese is the written form of Taiwanese.

In comparison to mandarin or any other Chinese language Taiwanese is much more fluent and accepted by mass
