National Taiwan University was known as Taihoku Imperial University which was founded by the Japanese in the year 1928. After the World War II, the Republic of China renamed Taihoku Imperial University to National Taiwan University on 15th November, 1945. The first president of the university was Dr. Lo Tsung-lo. College of Liberal Arts and Law of Taihoku Imperial University was divided into two separate colleges like College of Liberal Arts and College of Law.

The university has more than 500 students in its 22 departments. A new library was established in the year 1998 with has over 3,000,000 books. In the years, 1967, 1987, 1993 and 1997 some new colleges and divisions were introduced such as the Management College, College on Public Health, The Evening Division, Electrical Engineering college, which was renamed in the year 2000 as College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. College of Law was replaced by College on Social Science in the year 1999. In the year 2002, College of Agriculture was replaced by College of Bio Resources and Agriculture.
