Confucianism

Confucianism originated from Confucius' teachings. An early Chinese sage, Confucius founded Confucianism's teachings. Confucianism is also regarded as the philosophical and ethical system of China. The impact of Confucianism was felt in the history and culture of East Asia till the 21st century. Over the past 2500 years, Confucius has been regarded as the 'Supreme teacher and sage' in Chinese culture and history.

Confucianism is also regarded as a complex system of political, moral, social, religious, philosophical thought. Most of the people of Taiwan regard Confucianism as a philosophy and not a religion. Some of the elements of Confucianism are as follows:

  • Ancestors worship
  • Establishing harmonious with people of the society
  • Existence of deity is not denied or asserted

    Taiwanese regard Confucius's temples as halls to pay homage to Confucius. Every year on the birthday of Confucius elaborative festivals are held in the Confucius's temples in all over Taiwan to honor him.28th September is the birthday of Confucius, the founder of Confucianism. In Taiwan, 28th is also celebrated as a teacher's day. The Taiwanese regard Confucius as the 'first teacher'.

    In Tainan the Confucius temple was constructed in 1666. This temple is the first Confucius's temple in all over Taiwan. Confucius temple in Taiwan includes fifteen structures. In between the pillars and beams of the temple there hang boards, twelve in number which were awarded by sovereigns of different dynasties. The Confucius's Temple is regarded as the historic spot of Taiwan. The temple of Confucius was also regarded as the official institute of 'higher learning' till the end of the Manchu Dynasty.

    Confucianism teaches to live in harmony with others in the society.
