Chen Shui Bian is a well-known politician of Taiwan. Since 20th May, 2000, he has been the president of the Republic of China. This man of politics is popularly known as Ah-bian. Chen Shui Bian belongs to Democratic Progressive Party, DPP which is a strong supporter of Taiwan independence. Ending more than 50 years rule of Koumintang, KMT, the Democratic Progressive party came into operation. Chen Shui Bian, has been highly factious for his position on the independence of Taiwan.
Chen came from a financially weak background. Though he was not from a rich family but this never hampered his educational life. He was indeed a bright student. In June 1969, Chen Shui Bian was admitted to the National Taiwan University. Initially being a business administration major, he switched to Law in his first year and became the editor of the school's law review. He passed the bar exams before completing his first year with the highest score. Later on he earned the distinction of being Taiwan's youngest lawyer.
In 1980 Chen got involved in politics and defended the participants of the Kaohsiung incident against a military court. Later on he became an active as political member of the Tangwai movement.
In 1981 Chen got the seat in the Taipei City Council as a Tangwai candidate and worked until 1985. In 1984, he established the pro-opposition Civil Servant Public Policy Research Association that published a magazine named Neo-Formosa.
In 2000, Chen Shui Bian by getting the majority vote became the president of the Republic of China. During this period he acquired international fame as a strong political figure. Since then he is working hard for the betterment of his nation.
