The main function of American Institute Taiwan is to issue visas for the tourists and also to issue passport for the citizens of United States. American Institute Taiwan is authorized under the Taiwan Relation Act. The biggest office of AIT is situated in Taipei, Taiwan. It also has a head quarter office in Arlington (Virginia). In Kaohsiung, the south port city of Taiwan, AIT has a branch office. The offices located in different places are referred as AIT/ Taipei (AIT/ T), AIT/ Washington (AIT/W) respectively.
Stephen Young (18th March 2006) is the director of AIT, Taipei. Barbara Schrage is the Managing Director of AIT, Washington. Mr. Raymond Burghardt is the chairman of AIT. Mr. Charles T. Cross (1979-1981) was the first director of AIT. The American Institute Taiwan carries out transactions, programs and other activities initiated by any Government agency or President of U.S.A in respect to Taiwan. The AIT will carry out its transactions or any kind of agreement which is related with Taiwan according to the directions given by the President or any Government agency of USA. The institution is exempt from any kind of taxation.
AIT Taiwan was established to safeguard, protect and assist the interest of the people of United States.
