The New
Taiwan Dollar is also called the Taiwan Dollar. Taiwan , Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu which fall within the republic of China use it as its official currency. Originally the New
Taiwan Dollar was issued by the bank of Taiwan . Since 2000, the Central Bank of China began issuing the currency.
New
Taiwan Dollar interestingly has no subdivisions. This is because most of the consumer products are bought in whole units of
Yuan, the mandarin version of dollar.
In June 15 1949 the bank of Taiwan issued the New
Taiwan Dollar to replace the old Taiwan dollar. The note was primarily issued to counter the hyperinflation caused due to the civil war in mainland China and Taiwan . After the ROC government was routed by the communists the Chinese
yuan became the national currency of the republic of China . Despite this New
Taiwan Dollar remained the de-facto currency of Taiwan . 1
yuan was equivalent to 3 Taiwan dollars. Though Yuan was the legal currency it did not exist because it was difficult to use it in market.
In July 2000 the New
Taiwan Dollar got an equal footing with
yuan and became the official currency of the republic of China . The central bank of China began issuing the notes.
