The
Syria Government is a
Republican Government under a
Military regime. With its seat at
Damascus the capital of Syria, the
Government of Syria at a National level is represented by the
executive, legislative, and
judicial branches. The President of the
Syria Government is the head of the
State of Syria and is directly elected after every seven years. According to the
1973 Constitution of Syria the
President of the Syria Government is authorized with the power of appointing all the
Vice-presidents, the
Prime minister, and the
Council of ministers. The
Syria Government also designates the
President of the State of Syria as the
Chief of the armed forces of Syria and also the
Secretary general of the Baath Party. Presently,
Dr. Bashar al-Assad is serving his first seven years term as the President of the
Syria Government. The Council of Ministers in the Syria Government who serve under Dr. Bashar al-Assad include
members of Baath and other party members.
The
Legislative body of the
Syria Government is the
Majlis al-Shaab or the
People’s Assembly. This body of
Syria Government consists of 250 members who are elected by the people for a term of four years. The Legislative Body or the Peoples Assembly includes representatives from different
Political parties with the majority being from the
National Progressive Front which is dominated by the
Baath Party members.
The
Judicial System of the
Syria Government is also based on the 1973 Constitution. The
Supreme
Constitutional Court is established as the epitome of the system. The Supreme Constitutional Court constitutes a chief justice and four justices who are appointed for a period of four years by a Presidential Decree.
