Syria Industry



The growth of Syria Industry accelerated after the 1960s with the Syrian Government taking special initiative to Industrialize the country. The Syria Industry and Manufacturing sector was well patronized by the Government. The Government raised tariffs on imported goods and excepted tax and provided credit to the domestic Syria Industries. Syria Industries are characterized by diverse base and multi resource economy.

The base of Syria Industries are really broad and includes oil refining, textile industries, chemical, foodstuff, salt extraction, phosphate extraction,in addition to cast iron and steel industry, and cement, sugar and fertilizer industry. There are some Syria Industries that are completely State owned while there are others that are independently operated. The General Establishment of Chemical Industries (GECI) and the General Fertilizer Company (GFC) are the two most important Syria Industries that bloomed with State assistance.

Textile is perhaps the largest single manufacturing industry in Syria. The production of Cotton yarn in Syria ascends every year boosting the growth of the cotton textile Industry. Besides Cotton, woolen and mixed textiles also have a position in the arena of Syria Industries. Artistic work with different kinds of metals are also an integral part of Syria Industries. Artists work with copper, silver, brass, steel and iron. The availability of different kinds of minerals in Syria also open the scope for a blooming mineral industry. The main minerals found in Syria includes, natural gas, phosphates, salt and asphalt. The mountain areas contain some coal, iron ore, copper, gold and lead, but these are in small quantities.
