Yasser Seirawan is the pride of Syria because of his brilliant performance in the game of chess. He won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1979 at the tender age of 29. He is a chess grandmaster and has bagged US-champion for 4 times. According to the Fide report by the World Chess Federation

Yasser Seirawan was born on 24th March in 1960 at Damascus in Syria. He spent a few days of his childhood in Nottingham in England as his mother was a English nurse. His father was an Arab. At the age of seven,
Yasser Seirawan had to go to Seattle in USA with his parents. He studied there at McClure Middle School and Garfield High School.
Yasser Seirawan had a likeness for the game of chess since his childhood. At Seattle he got the opportunity to perfect his game by playing against the likes of Latvian-born master Viktors Pupols and six-time Washington State Champion Jim McCormick. They played for hours at a coffeehouse, The Last Exit on Brooklyn.
Yasser Seirawan started to play the game of chess at the age of 12. He took up the game pretty fast and emerged as the Washington junior champion at the age of 13. After his win in the World Junior Chess Championship he got the invitation from Victor Korchnoi to Switzerland. Korchnoi invited
Yasser Seirawan to prepare himself for the world title match against Anatoly Karpov.
