Syria is a culturally gifted country and maintains a tradition of its own which is unique in all perspectives. Family takes a leading role in placing strong moral and ethical values. The Syrians taste for arts takes a leading role in the expression of their cultural values.
Syrian Culture is well expressed through their traditional dances, among which al- samah, dabkes, the sword dance etc are the prominent ones.
The houses of Syria are traditionally build in Damascus, Aleppo, and the living quarters are arranged in such a way that they are around one or more courtyards, mostly with a container in the middle which is supplied by spring water and are beautifully decorated with citrus trees, grape vines and flowers for the comfort of the family and for the entertainment of the guests.
Some Syrian customs revolve around their handicrafts. These crafts are still made in the same way they were used to be made thousands of years ago. Their skills of Embroidery, Ceramics, Pottery, Jewelry are all carried down from generation to generation. These age old traditions simply exemplify the
Syrian Culture.
Syrian Culture can be best expressed through the traditions and customs of the place. We can mention about a few like:
- Jewelry: Jewelry has a long history in Syria. From various archaeological sites, silver and gold jewelries, which could be traced back to the Roman times, have been unearthed. Today, most of the women of Syria wear gold as well as silver jewelries and it is found in all the strata of the society. The jewelries include bracelets, hair ornaments, rings and lots more.
- Ceramics and pottery: Syria has many natural clay deposits, which have been used from the past centuries extensively for the making of pottery. Early examples of pottery consisted of vessels for storing food. Large pots and vessels called Jarras were originally used for storing olive oil and water.
- Embroidery: This is considered as one of the most important traditional crafts which have been handed down from the past generations. In recent years Syrian embroidery has been incorporated into high fashion. Stylish and elegant jackets and gowns have been created using needle work, along with Middle Eastern fabrics. The art of embroidery includes the making of cushions, which decorate the interior of many Syrian Homes. The colors of these embroidered cushions, jackets, etc are rich and the shades range from pink to purple to red and green. Colors surely make these handicrafts even prettier.
