Switzerland’s History


There is a great influence of the Christian culture on the history of Switzerland . The geographical position of Switzerland attracted the European powers to come and settle in Switzerland. The passage through the Alps made the Europeans easier to explore Switzerland.

The history of Switzerland witnessed a number of cultures coming and forming a common union. In 1848 Switzerland was recognized as a Centralized Federal State.

Evidences of Human settlements have been found dating 150,000 years back. The oldest tool is 100,000 years old. Neandertal hunters were the oldest tribe and evidence of their inhabitations is found in the caves. Cotencher in Canton is a famous historic site which bears evidences of Neandertal hunters .The tribes started farming in the 6 th millennium B.C. Gächlingen in Canton Schaffhausen bear evidences of farming in the 5300 B.C.

The use of copper started in the 3800 B.C.followed by Bronze..Switzerland is also called the Amesbury Archer", or "King of Stonehenge" .

The Dark Age began in Switzerland in the 400B.C and continued till 1000 B.C.During the first few centuries' people led a restless life and migrated from one place to another. Many people came from Asia and settled here. There was a remarkable change in the languages and life styles of the people.

The Roman influence of the church was spread on the common people. The people were dominated by the bishoprics and monasteries. By conquest, marriage and inheritance the noble men were gaining power.

Frankish king Charlemagne ruled the West for some time. Still there was no stability in the society. The king depended on the noble families. But the influence of the church remained dominant.

The Pope was convinced by the German king Otto I to make him the Emperor. Later this period came to be known as the Roman Empire.
