Christmas in Sweden



Celebration of Christmas in Sweden lasts for almost two months in Sweden. On every Sunday before the advent of Christmas a candle made up of stick is well decorated with red berries, white lichen or by paper mache mushroom is lit to mark the advent of Christmas. St. Lucia's Day is celebrated all over on December 13. On this day especially every elder daughter of the family wears white robes and with candles she holds wreath. To all the family members she serves bread ( Lussekatter or St Lucia's buns) and coffee. Every young girl portray St Lucia. Whereas boys play the role of star boys ( Jultomten's helpers). The ornamentation used in Christmas are straw, animals especially goats, light, tinsel, glass for decorating the Christmas tree.

In the dinner of the Christmas eve a big smorgasbord or dinner is served. Rice Pudding is usually served and inside it an is hidden. It is said that whoever gets the almond will be the next to get married next year. On Christmas eve, children in Sweden anxiously waits for their gifts that is brought by Jultomten (now it is a cross between a little gnome and British/German Santa Claus). The children light candles so that he can make his to the children's homes. A bowl of Porridge is also served to him by the children. Christmas in Sweden is enjoyed with high spirit. Everyone gets the longest holiday of the year during Christmas in Sweden.
