Vadstena

Vadstena is a city as well as on of the well-known Swedish municipalities, located in Östergötland County. It attained municipal authorities officially around 1970s, during countrywide reforms on local governmental level. In 1974, it combined itself with the Motala Municipality, but this merger proved unsuccessful. It was ultimately in 1980 that Vadstena obtained the present status of a Swedish municipal region. However, the 12 original political units were included and retained within the current municipality of Vadstena.

In terms of the total population, Vadstena holds the 246th position among the total 290 Swedish municipalities. Situated on the shores of Vättern, the second largest lake in Sweden, the city enjoys a scenic location with exquisite waterfront at the vicinity. Fishes of diverse species found in the lake waters form the staple diet of people inhabiting the region. In fact, fishing had been one of the primary occupations and food sources of Vadstena population since the 1000 AD. They also formed important parts of the overseas trading commodities in early, pre-historic times.

The picturesque nature comprises the main attraction of Vadstena, from the travel and tourism point of view. The region has two natural reserves, one at Kastad kulle torräng, rich in lime and several other vegetations such as Oxytropis pilosa. The other natural park is found in Ombergsliden, covering a total land area of 230,000 square meters. It is basically a lime-rich marshy land, with numerous plants like the unusual Tuber geophyte orchid and carnivore Butterwort plant growing on it, to enhance the scenic beauty of the surroundings.

A handful of popular travel destinations in Vadstena include the following:

  • Hagebyhöga Church
  • Väversunda Church
  • Hov Church
  • Örberga Church
  • Vadstena Castle
  • Vadstena Abbey
  • Herrestad Church
  • Rogslösa Church
  • Nässja kyrka Church
  • 15th century Vadstena in Suecia antiqua et hodierna circa 1700 Gallery, which is the oldest in Sweden
  • Swedish Town Hall
  • Vadstena Hospital and Museum

These places together attract a huge bulk of foreign travelers each year, thereby depositing lump some amounts to the national exchequer for making Vadstena, economically sound, affluent and self-sufficient.
