Suriname railways plays a very important role in the whole transportation system of the country. Transportation system of Suriname consists of railways, water ways and airways. Suriname railways connects many portion of the country and provide reliable transportation facility. Railways and bus services are the two main surface transportation systems in Suriname.
The people of Suriname do not enjoy a very developed railway transportation system. Due to several causes, both political and natural, Suriname railways has not attained a very high level of development. Among the total railway tracks that are used in Suriname, there are share of both the Suriname government and also the various industries. The total railway tracks in Suriname is of one hundred and sixty six kilometers. This track is consisted of both the standard gauge and the narrow gauge. Standard gauge consists of eighty kilometers of the total railway tracks and the rest in narrow gauge railway tracks. Suriname railways are one of the other four ways of transportation that plays a important role in the country.
