History of Suriname shows that the country was first invaded by the Native Americans. Presently the country of Suriname is home to various indigenous races and culture. History of Suriname shows the presence of two important tribes and they were Arawaks and the Caribs. The Arawaks were basically the nomadic tribes and dwelt on hunting and fishing whereas the Caribs were smaller tribes and they lived in inland rain forest. English men tried a lot to settle their colonies but failed successively and in the 16th century the Dutch invaded Suriname. Sugar plantation was a major economic activity in those days as the English and Dutch brought almost 2000 African Slaves in their new settled colonies. Thus the first part of the 18th century witnessed the Agriculture boom in Suriname history and the African slaves did all the plantation work. The maroons (African Slave leaders) put on a lot of effort to abolish slavery from the Suriname.
South America Suriname gained independence in 1954 and Netherlands was the country involved with the defense and foreign affair matters. The ban on the opposition parties were lifted along with the operations started for devising a new constitution in the year of 1985. A peace treaty was signed between the government and several guerrilla groups in 1992.
History of Suriname experienced widespread strikes in 1999 as the government handled the economic condition with the strikers and called for the early elections. A coalition led by the former president of Suriname Ronald Venetian won the election and it has laid some new front of Democracy and Government.
