Wageningen is an agricultural town located in the coastal regions of West Suriname. It falls in the district of Nickerie and is popular as the 'rice center of Suriname'. The geographical location of Wageningen is 5° 46' NB, 56° 41' WL. Fertile land along with a pleasant climate and enough amount of rainfall makes Wageningen apt for rice cultivation .
The village of Wageningen is 54 Kms from New Nickerie which is the main city of the district of Nickerie where Wageningen is situated and 203 Kms from Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. Though small the village has a population of 6000 and is well equipped with a police station, a post office, an administrative office and a doctor's chamber. A landing strip for small airplanes is also present in Wageningen Suriname. This is mainly for agricultural purposes.
