Nieuw Amsterdam

Located in the Commewijne district, Nieuw Amsterdam is the capital of the district. Nieuw Amsterdam is a busy town in the coastal region of Suriname a little further from Paramaribo, the capital of the country. It is situated at the mouth of the Suriname river which forms the basis for settlement of people in this region. It is one of the most significant cities of Suriname.

Nieuw Amsterdam in Suriname gets its name from the Dutch who had settled down in the area and later became the masters of the land. The present population of Nieuw Amsterdam is only 1,200. The society of the town of Nieuw Amsterdam is a mixture of several ethnic races. Most of the people living in the town are Javanese or Hindustanis.

The cities and towns that are situated close to Nieuw Amsterdam Suriname are Post Leyden, Pieterszorg, Clevia etc. The airports in Paramaribo and Zandery which are near the town connect Nieuw Amsterdam with the rest of the world. From the airposrts taxis and buses are available that take the tourists to the town of Nieuw Amsterdam. Temperatures remain high in Nieuw Amsterdam as it falls under the tropical zone. Rainfall is also heavy during the month of July.

A popular attraction in Nieuw Amsterdam is the old fort which was constructed between 1743 and 1758. It is now a part of an open air museums that holds an interesting exhibition of various things. The areas near Nieuw Amsterdam in the same district include fishing villages and old plantations which are worth a visit while in Suriname.
