Batavia

Batavia is one of the significant towns of Suriname. It falls in the Saramacca District which lies in the northern part of Suriname. Its is one of the three largest towns in the district the other two being Groningen and Boskamp.

People in Batavia in Suriname are called Surinamese. Suriname is the seat of the amalgamation of varied ethnic groups. Batavia too is a part of this amalgamation. Though most of the people living in the city of Batavia are native Surinamese there are people belonging to other ethnic races too. Thus such an ethnic mixture has given rise to a mixed society and culture. There are social divisions which exist in Batavia like the elite, the middle class etc. Most of the people interact with those of their ethnic group. Therefore ethnicity is a significant aspect of Batavia.

The cities and towns that are nearest to Batavia Suriname are Jenny, Caledonia, Carl Francois, Dirkshoop, Groot Poika etc. Airports that are close to Batavia are in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname and in Zandery. Therefore no direct fight is available to Batavia. To reach the city a flight to either of the two cities has to be taken and then local transport has to be availed to reach Batavia.

Batavia has a tropical climate with weather conditions typical to this climate. Summers are hot with heavy rainfall during the rainy season. Humidity is high. Thus a visit to this city is recommended during the winters which are cool and pleasant. A trip to Suriname is incomplete without visiting Batavia as it is one of the significant towns of Suriname and contains in it the history and culture of the country.
