Places to visit in RatnapuraSinharaja Forest: A visit to this reserved forest area would divulge the rich diversity of Sri Lanka's flora and fauna. This bio-reserve is a popular tourist destination as well as a prominent center for scientific research. Covering an area of 11000 hectares, Sinharaja has been regarded as one of the best bird watching spots.
Uda Walawe Wild Life Park : Situated in the Dry Zone of Ratnapura, the national park comprises of huge expansions of grasslands and thorn scrubs, which also include many valuable species of trees and plants. Elephants and Deer species such as spotted Deer, Sambhur, Barking deer and Langur, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo, Jackal are some of the wild animals found in this Park. The areas around the proximity of the park are popular trekking destinations and are also a good place for bird watching. Visit traditional gem mining and various gem shops are also goos past times.
Ehelepola Museum: It is a folk cultural museum and provides a relegating experience of the rich cultural diversity of Ratnapura. Apart from them, there is a private museum called The Gem Museum, which provide a detailed information on the gem mining and gem cutting methodology.
Ratnapura's major shrine, which is known for its pious solemity, is the temple of of the Sri Pada. So famous is this temple that it has a hill named after it. Although it is a pilgrimage destination, the hilly stretch is much more popular for the spectacular view it offers during sun rise.
