Kurunegala City Map

Kurunegala city of Sri Lanka is the capital of Kurunegala district and Wayambe Province (the North Western Province). This city is important in terms of the roadway and railway connection it provides to connect to many important cities of Kurunegala. Kurunegala, the name comes from the words 'Kurune' and 'Singala'. Kurune means an elephant with tasks and Singala refers to rock. Earlier, Kurunegala was called Hasthishailya-pura and Athugal-pura.

Kurunegala had been th one time capital of Sri Lanka. King Buvanekabahu II (1293-1302) and King Parakramabahu IV (1302-1326) were the two most important kings who are to be credited for bringing prominece to this district and city if only for half a century. Previously being a notorious breeding ground of Malaria, this was a scarcely populated region of Sri Lanka.
