Northern Ireland athletes to compete in Rio Olympics despite Zika scare

Athletes from Northern Ireland, who are set to compete in Rio Olympics, have said that concerns over the Zika virus will not prevent them from flying to Brazil. Ryan Seaton (28), a sailor from Carrick; Ciara Mageean (24), a runner from Portaferry, and Aileen Reid (33), a triathlete from Londonderry said that they are well informed about Zika virus and they have taken full precautions to stay safe. All of them are making preparations for the Summer Games.

 

British heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson qualifies for Rio Olympics

Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson qualified for the Rio Olympics after finishing with 6,304 points at the Hypo-Meeting in Austria. Katarina wanted 6,200 points to qualify for Rio Olympics. The 23-year-old British track and field athlete was the champion in 2014. This would be her second participation in Summer Olympics.

 

Djokovic plans to compete at Rio Olympics despite Zika scare

Tennis player Novak Djokovic said that cancelling the Rio Olympics "is unthinkable" and he is still preparing to compete at the 2016 Summer Games, despite concerns over Zika virus. Currently the World No.1 tennis player, the Serbian star said that the people should not only be concerned about players going to Rio for the Olympics, but also Brazilians living there. Earlier, the World Health Organization rejected a call from 150 health experts to relocate or postpone the Aug 5-21 Olympics.

 

Health experts urge WHO to consider postponing or relocating Rio Olympics

Around 150 health experts, including a former White House science adviser, urged the World Health Organization on Friday to consider postponing or moving Rio Olympics because of the Zika outbreak. The experts issued an open letter to the U.N. health agency, citing recent scientific evidence of the devastating impact of Zika virus. 

 

Rio Olympics 2016: Maria Sharapova named in Russian squad

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova, who was provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), has been named in the Russian team for the Rio Olympics 2016. Sharapova is barred from participating in any event. Other than Sharapova, three other female players – Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Darya Kasatkina – were provisionally named by the Russian Tennis Federation (RTF). They will all compete in women's singles event.
