There is a certain pride in hosting the Winter Olympics and this year the Winter Olympics will be held at Sochi, a city on the Black Sea coast in Russia.

The Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held from 6th February to 23rd February, 2014. This event brings about 2,500+ athletes under one umbrella. Athletes compete in fourteen different sports event that include Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Free Style Skating, Ice Hockey, Nordic Combined, Short track speed skating, Luge, Skeleton, Sky jumping, Snowboarding, and Speed Skating.

Athletes from Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, North Korea, Senegal, and South Africa participated in the 2010 games. However, they will not be participating in 2014 Winter Olympics. Indian athletes would be participating independently under the Olympic Flag due to a ban imposed on India.

Zimbabwe, Virgin-Islands, Toga, Tongo, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Phillipines, Paraguay, Malta and British Virgin Islands are the countries that will debut in this edition of Winter Olympics.

United Nations has the highest number of participating athletes with over 224 qualifiers. As a host nation Russia follows United Nations with 126 qualifiers.

Albania, Algeria, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, San Marino, Thailand, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Virgin-Island and Zimbabwe have one qualifier each. Rio Olympics: Estonian sisters to be the first identical triplets to run marathon

Three Estonian sisters, who are identical triplets, are all set to compete against each other at Rio Olympics. Marathon running sisters – Leila, Liina and Lily Luik – will become the first identical triplets to compete against each other in Summer Olympics. Estonia will count on these sprinters when they cross the start line for the women’s marathon in Rio.

British athlete Goldie Sayers to withdraw from Rio Olympics if Russia takes part

British javelin record holder Goldie Sayers has considered not to compete at Rio Olympics in August if Russian athletes are allowed to take part. Allegations of state-organized doping have led to the banning of Russian athletes from international competition. While Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko said that the ban should be lifted, he doesn't have much hope.

Canadian rowers qualify for Rio Olympics

The Canadian rowers qualified for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics after the quad finished second in the Olympic qualifying race held in Lucerne, Switzerland. The Canadian quad consists of Rob Gibson, a 2012 London Olympics silver medalist, Will Dean, Pascal Lussier, and Julien Bahain. Canada will join Australia, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Russia on the start line.

Australian men's Rowing team fails to qualify for Rio Olympics 2016

Australia's men's rowing team will not compete at the Rio Olympics for the first time since 1948. The eight-member team has failed to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics as it ended up being a distant fourth at the "Regatta of Death" in Lucerne, Switzerland. Only men's single sculler Rhys Grant qualified for Rio. Even the Australian women's eight also failed to qualify.

Golfer Rory McIlroy hints at withdrawing from Rio Olympics over Zika fears

World No. 3 golfer Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland is likely to withdraw from Rio Olympics over threats of Zika virus. Earlier, Australia's Marc Leishman and Fiji's Vijay Singh had pulled out of the games citing similar reasons. McIlroy has been closely monitoring the spread of Zika and he hasn't ruled out the possibility of joining the list of absentees from 2016 Summer Olympics.
