There is a certain pride in hosting the Winter Olympics and this year the Winter Olympics will be held at Sochi, a city on the Black Sea coast in Russia.

The Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held from 6th February to 23rd February, 2014. This event brings about 2,500+ athletes under one umbrella. Athletes compete in fourteen different sports event that include Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Free Style Skating, Ice Hockey, Nordic Combined, Short track speed skating, Luge, Skeleton, Sky jumping, Snowboarding, and Speed Skating.

Athletes from Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, North Korea, Senegal, and South Africa participated in the 2010 games. However, they will not be participating in 2014 Winter Olympics. Indian athletes would be participating independently under the Olympic Flag due to a ban imposed on India.

Zimbabwe, Virgin-Islands, Toga, Tongo, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Phillipines, Paraguay, Malta and British Virgin Islands are the countries that will debut in this edition of Winter Olympics.

United Nations has the highest number of participating athletes with over 224 qualifiers. As a host nation Russia follows United Nations with 126 qualifiers.

Albania, Algeria, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, San Marino, Thailand, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Virgin-Island and Zimbabwe have one qualifier each. US sending 292 women to Rio 2016 Games

The United States of America would be sending a whopping 282 women to the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This is the first time ever that a single country has sent maximum number of women athletes for competing at an Olympics. The US Olympic Committee officially announced its 555-person team, out of which three members, including the equestrian Phillip Dutton and shooters Emil Milev and Kim Rhode would be participating at the Olympics for the sixth time. 

No comprehensive ban on Russian athletes, says IOC

Not paying heed to the frequent calls by the anti-doping officials for a complete ban on Russia, the officials at IOC (International Olympic Committee) have assigned individual worldwide sports federations the task of deciding about the Russian athletes which can be debarred from competing in the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Games scheduled to start from 5 August 2016.  

Germany's Dressage sensation Isabell Werth gears up for Rio 2016 Games

After having won gold medal for four consecutive times at the Olympic Games,Germany’s Dressage star Isabell Werth is aiming to build a unique niche for herself at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games which are scheduled for next month.  At a tender age of 17, Isabell had the privilege of training under Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer and later she paired up with a gelding known as Gigolo. 

Super Thursday witnesses sale of 100,000+ rickets to Rio 2016 Games

An impressive 100,000+ tickets to the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games were sold in the first four-and-a-half hours of ‘Super Thursday’ on 21 July 2016. Some of the sports which witnessed maximum purchase of tickets include beach volleyball, football, basketball, tennis and athletics. The tickets for the final of the men’s 100m weren’t included in the Super Thursday batch of tickets. 

High-tech polyclinic unveiled in Rio 2016 Olympic Village

A state-of-the-art polyclinic equipped with x-ray rooms, dentist surgeries, MRI scanners and physical therapy rooms has been officially opened in the Rio 2016 Olympic Village. As the largest polyclinic in the Olympic history, it is spread in an area of 3,500 square meter. Moreover, the clinic also comprises preventive as well as emergency care.
