As shown in the Castile and Leon political map, the community is bordered by Asturias and Cantabria to the north; Aragon, the Basque Country, and La Rioja to the east; the autonomous community of Madrid and Castile-La Mancha to the south-east; Extremadura to the south; and Portugal and Galicia to the west.

The community is divided into nine provinces. They are: Avila, Burgos, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Zamora.

Owing to many pilgrimage places like the Camino de Santiago, Cathedral of Burgos; and other architectural masterpieces, tourism is one of the mainstay of the economy of Castile and Leon. Many places in the region like the Old city and aqueduct of Segovia, Old city and wall of Avila, Old city of Salamanca, and Las Medulas are designated as world heritage sites by the UNESCO.
